I am a test engineer on the Wireless Connectivity team. I spend my days running validation tests on the TCP module that connects GM cars to the cell network, to make sure features like OnStar calls or the car's wifi hotspot work as intended. I often find problems with the module itself, in code or hardware, with the cell network (ours was AT&T), with other modules inside the car, or with the data flow design for GM services, and report them to the relevant teams for fixing. Then once a patch is made, I retest and reverify. I often work with suppliers to troubleshoot issues, mainly LG.

My first year at GM was spent as a D.R.E., in charge of the design and production of my part, which was the headliner on the 2024 electric Equinox. The headliner is the felt material on the ceiling of your car's interior (actually its a multilayered pressed plastic composite material, mostly Thermoform). I was responsible for ensuring that my headliner was produced to GM quality, had no major safety concerns (the US DOT regulates a head impact area by the sun visor between the headliner and sheet metal roof in the event of a crash), and that enough parts made it onto the production line in time for Start of Regular Production for over a million vehicles.

This was my first introduction to electrical engineering in industry, and forever cemented me as an RF specialist (as opposed to power, controls, etc.). I got to design a component from scratch using low-loss components that made its way to the radar on an F-16 fighter jet through our contractor, L3-Harris. I also got to design parts of a new commercial cell antenna that would be deployed in Montana and overseas at multiple new cell sites.
